A manhunt Friday led to the arrest of a Charlottesville man suspected of assaulting a woman in Albemarle County and fleeing the scene, and the county, with an 8-month-old child in tow.

While police were originally dispatched early Friday morning to an Albemarle apartment complex just south of Charlottesville, 22-year-old Malik Izaya Thornton was apprehended hours later in Fluvanna County. He’s been charged with strangulation, child abuse, assault on a family member, abduction by force and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Officers were dispatched around 3 a.m. Friday to the Cavalier Crossing apartments, where a woman had reported feeling dizzy and nauseous.
