A major motorway has shut after a serious crash sparked travel chaos for thousands of drivers.

Drivers are expected to face lengthy delays along the route into Croydon from the M25. Emergency services have raced to the scene after being alerted at about 6:45am today.

The crash is understood to have happened on the A23 close to Merstham with traffic building up following the incident. There is currently no timeframe for reopening. 10:55 Anders Anglesey
