A pressure group for passengers says next year's expected rise in rail fares would be 'outrageous'.

It comes as a major clue for how much more passengers will have to cough up is expected to be revealed on Wednesday (August 20).

The latest inflation figure will be announced on that day, with the Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure for July set to be confirmed.

July's RPI figure is often used to determine increases in the cost of train travel.

The Government has not confirmed how it will determine the cap in regulated fare rises for 2026, but this year's 4.6 per cent hike was one percentage point above RPI in July 2024.
