A bill filed by a Mobile County lawmaker ahead of the 2026 legislative session would give Alabama restaurants an income tax credit for donating oyster shells to environmental groups for recycling into Mobile Bay and the Gulf, if passed into law.

Rep. Chip Brown, R-Hollinger’s Island, said Friday that the bill he filed on Monday would give restaurants on either side of Mobile Bay and around the state a financial incentive to create new habitats for oysters and other marine life. The shells of the bivalves, most often served raw, fried or grilled, can be cleaned and returned to the waters from which they came, where they will create artificial reefs for the next generation of shellfish.
