Mass Shooting Leaves Transient Dead, Two Other Homeless People Wounded in East LA

Three homeless men were shot in alley in unincorporated East Los Angeles Saturday, one fatally.

Deputies with the department’s East L.A. sheriff’s station were called at approximately 2:25 a.m. Saturday to the 5100 block of Whittier Boulevard, near Woods Avenue, where they found three victims, LASD Lt. Steven De Jong said.

A 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, De Jong said. Two other men were ambulanced to a hospital with gunshot wounds to their legs, but had stable vital signs.

“Investigators learned the victims were transients living in tents in the alley,” the lieutenant said. The unknown suspect “shot at them from Woods Avenue and then fled the scene in an unknown direction.”

The investigation was ongoing.
