Superman legend Terence Stamp dies, aged 87

Legendary English actor Terence Stamp, who played the villain General Zod in Superman films, has died - aged 87. Stamp also starred in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Far From the Madding Crowd and Valkyrie.

In the Superman world, he went on to play Superman's father Jor-El in the TV series Smallville.

He died on Sunday morning, his family said, adding: "He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and a writer that will continue to touch people for years to come."

Terence Stamp was born 22 July 1938 in Stepney, London. He became well known in the 1960s as part of the "British New Wave" of cinema, earning early acclaim for his role in Billy Budd (1962), which earned him an Academy Award nomination
