A motorcyclist died Friday night after losing control of his motorcycle on a North Wildwood street, police said.

Police responded to a report of a serious crash at 600 W. Spruce Avenue at 9:53 p.m., the North Wildwood Police Department said in a news release . The avenue is the major route into North Wildwood from the mainland.

The motorcyclist was traveling westbound when he lost control of the vehicle, went off the roadway and crashed, authorities said.

Prior to the crash, an officer observed the motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

The driver was transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, but died from his injuries.

“We would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the driver,” the police department said in the release.
