BOSTON — The official word didn’t come until Saturday night and wasn’t made public until Sunday morning.
But when Marcelo Mayer first injured his right wrist in Philadelphia in the final week of July, he suspected that he would eventually need surgery to repair it.
“I gave it my all, obviously, with my options given,” said Mayer, shortly after Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed that Mayer’s season was officially over with season-ending surgery set for sometime in the coming week. “I could have had surgery when I first injured it or we could go with the (cortisone) shot and try to do everything I can for the slight chance to come back and play.
