The roof of a suburban apartment building was torn to pieces by severe thunderstorms that swept through the Chicago area Saturday afternoon.

The damage happened in Mount Prospect, a northwest suburb of Chicago, where residents were rushed out of the building after strong winds ripped away much of the roof.

Around 4:45 p.m., Mount Prospect Fire responded to the four-story apartment complex for reports the roof was partially torn off, authorities said.

Pipes in the building burst as the roof was torn away, sending water gushing into the building, a resident said.

"Water was just pouring down the ceiling in all the hallways," said Kamil Seremac, a resident of the building. "It was scary."
