It was once the scourge of the seas.

Sailors would be going along, literally three sheets to the wind whenever possible. Months into a journey, something would start to happen.

At first it would just be flu-like symptoms. Fatigue, malaise, irritability. I imagine many a seagoer at this stage would still be dismissing their symptoms, but little would they know, they were in for much worse.

It would continue with strange hair growth like corkscrews and small, red spots around the follicles. If they were busy enough, they still might not notice anything until suddenly they would begin bruising at the gentlest touch.

Eating would become difficult as their gums would swell, bleed and ache.
