All the work the Cardinals did to cobble together enough offense Sunday to tie the game and take the lead was mishandled quickly in the ninth inning.

Two errors opened the way for the New York Yankees to score four runs and complete a weekend sweep of their hosts with an 8-4 victory at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals lost the final five games of their nine-game homestand.

The ninth inning began with Thomas Saggese’s fielding error at second base and continued with Saggese’s error on Cody Bellinger’s ground ball four batters later. Mix in a walk to pinch hitter Giancarlo Stanton and an intentionally walk to Aaron Judge, and the Yankees had all the ingredients to turn a long but taut game into another Cardinals loss.
