GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Great Lakes Fishery Commission is receiving more than $2 million in federal funding to help protect against the spread of the invasive sea lamprey.
The funding comes by way of the US Environmental Protection Agency, providing $2.1 million to not only better protect against harmful species, but also to aid in restoring the rapids.
The fishery commission says those funds will help them create a sea lamprey barrier on the Grand River. That barrier would sit about a mile upstream from where the Sixth Street Dam is currently.
The commission says the barrier would help protect more than 4,000 river miles from destructive sea lamprey by preventing them from accessing their spawning points.
They claim a single sea lamprey can destroy up to 40 pounds of fish.
