Back in May of 2018, the Bills put out their initial depth chart and the quarterback pecking order was A.J. McCarron, Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen. Sure, the Bills traded up in the draft to select Allen with the No. 7 pick, but the rookie was far behind the other two, as far as development and command of the offense, explained general manager Brandon Beane.

Allen eventually moved up to the backup spot and was given a chance to unseat Peterman. Allen, though, did not pass the test in the third preseason game that summer, looking flustered and confused by the Bengals pass rush.
