OCEANA COUNTY, MI – Police shot and killed a man who was subject of a manhunt on Sunday, Aug. 17, after he reportedly shot another man in the leg.
Don Albert Stapel Jr., 59, was fatally shot after the state police Emergency Support Team found him in an outbuilding.
Under state police policy, detectives from the Fifth District based in Paw Paw are investigating the officer-involved shooting, according to Sixth District Lt. Michelle Robinson.
Stapel was suspected of shooting a man in the leg around 10:30 a.m. and had fled into the woods, Robinson told WOOD-TV 8.
State police put out an alert advising those living in the 7500 block of Fox Road in Mears, east of Silver Lake State Park, to shelter in place. Police believed Staple was armed and had fled to nearby woods.
