DES MOINES, Iowa —

A body was discovered Sunday evening in the Des Moines River, according to authorities.

Des Moines police say they and the Des Moines Fire Department responded to the Women of Achievement Bridge shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a body in the river.

First responders confirmed finding an obviously deceased person in the water, but cannot attempt a recovery Sunday night due to the rapid water flow rate, the close proximity to the dam and the darkness.

Des Moines police say recovery efforts will resume on Monday. In the meantime, Bobber Park, the Women of Achievement Bridge and the connecting trails are temporarily closed.
