Leader of the People’s Development Party (PDP), Kondwani Nankhumwa, has announced plans to establish a Presidential Religious Fund aimed at supporting churches and mosques in the construction of worship centers across the country.

Speaking yesterday during the launch of the PDP manifesto at Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre, Nankhumwa said the fund would specifically help religious institutions roof churches and mosques with iron sheets.

“By the end of our five-year term in government, we will ensure that no church or mosque in Malawi remains thatched with grass,” said Nankhumwa.

However, the proposal has sparked mixed reactions, with many Malawians criticizing the idea as unnecessary and misplaced given the country’s pressing development priorities.
