Keir Starmer has split with Donald Trump by insisting that Ukraine must be allowed to join Nato if it wants to.

The prime minister’s official spokesman said on Monday that Kyiv is on an “irreversible path” to membership of the military alliance.

That put him at odds with the US president, who insisted that Ukraine should be blocked from joining Nato as part of any peace deal to end the war in the country.

Posting on his Truth Social site on Sunday, Trump said: “ President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE.”
