A West Lorne registered nurse who flies into a remote northern Ontario First Nations community is hoping to solve a long-standing problem with wild dogs there.

Shannon Mullin, who has worked for 22 years as a nurse in the Oji-Cree community of Wapekeka, about 450 kilometres northeast of Sioux Lookout, says out-of-control stray dogs there have been shot to control their populations.

“There’s always the potential for someone to be attacked by one of the dogs,” she said.

Strays, mostly huskies or shepherd crosses, pose a risk to the 550 residents and smaller animals, such as puppies and cats, Mullin said.
