AUBURN, Ala. — An Atlanta native and college football legend will be honored this year by his former program with a number retirement ceremony .

The Auburn Tigers made the announcement Monday that they'll retire the No. 2 that Cam Newton wore for them in his 2010 Heisman-winning season.

A ceremony will be held at the Oct. 11 home game against Georgia, the school said.

Auburn won the national championship during the 2010 season, with Newton then going on to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft for the Carolina Panthers, where he played for nearly a decade and won the 2015 NFL MVP Award.

His impact at Auburn was iconic — leading to the decision to retire his number despite just the one season there. He also played earlier in his collegiate career at Florida. His will be the fourth number
