LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (KCTV) - The Leavenworth Police Department has arrested a Kansas City, Missouri, woman accused of first-degree murder in a toddler’s death.

40-year-old Tara Huerta was taken into custody on Friday, August 15.

Her arrest came months after a 3-year-old was found unresponsive in a Leavenworth apartment on March 26, 2025. Paramedics brought the child to a nearby hospital, but the child did not survive.

Two months later, on May 29, an autopsy report confirmed the toddler died of acute fentanyl toxicity.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation further confirmed that methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl were all present in the apartment.

The information was presented to the Leavenworth County Prosecutor’s Office, and Huerta is now charged with:

First-Degree Murder

Aggravated
