This summer has been hotter than average, but not by any extreme means, according to a recent News story. That doesn't mean temperatures reaching into the upper 80s are comfortable. People need to cool off, especially important in the tree-less, sweltering inner city, where splash pads are fine but outdoor swimming pools are finer. Ever try taking a dip in the deep end of a splash pad?

Also, when a swimming pool closes, it creates one more barrier to lifesaving swimming lessons.

Those closures are all too common in the City of Buffalo when any one of its outdoor municipal swimming pools is taken out of commission for the summer because of lifeguard shortages, repairs or maintenance.
