Gerry Stange donated $1 million to his friends, but he kept it a secret.
On Wednesday, Stange's life-changing donation to the Canterbury Woods retirement community's Benevolence Fund will be renamed in his honor. Stange, who died in 2021, was a resident of Canterbury Woods for 11 years.
"Mr. Stange would be mad at me, right now, if he knew that we were renaming this in his name," Canterbury CEO Robert Wallace said. "He was a private guy."
Described by Wallace as an unassuming yet passionate community member, Stange was also a savvy investor. Stange bought stock in Microsoft and Apple in the 1970s, ensuring that his funds would outlast him and allowing him to give to others.
