North Dakota health officials have reported a sharp rise in West Nile virus cases across the state.

A total of 32 human cases had been reported statewide as of Aug. 18, already approaching the number reported for all of 2024, according to the North Dakota Health and Human Services' dashboard .

“People should be aware of the increase in mosquitoes spreading West Nile virus and take proper precautions to protect themselves from bites,” Amanda Bakken, a state epidemiologist, said in a news release . “Peak West Nile virus activity historically has occurred in late August, but with earlier human cases and high mosquito populations, this is the time to be vigilant and safeguard against disease.”
