What are the potential ramifications if the Court weakens Section Two or ultimately does away with it?
First of all, it would be a huge blow for minority representation. A big part of the reason that we have such diverse legislative bodies, including Congress and state legislatures, is because the Voting Rights Act requires the drawing of districts to give minority voters the same opportunities as other voters to participate in the political process and to elect representatives of their choice. So we would see much whiter legislative bodies, including Congress, if the Court got rid of Section Two.
