If Broward County is the hotbed for high school football in the state of Florida, this past season, its exploits were on full display.

Programs from the 954 area code — Hollywood’s Chaminade-Madonna, Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas and Plantation’s American Heritage — represented three of the seven FHSAA football state champions in 2024, more than any other county and the only one with more than one. And if you ask those within these programs, it’s not by chance.

“Winning is not easy. I think a lot of people think it is, but for programs like Heritage and Chaminade and St. Thomas, it’s hard every year,” American Heritage head coach Mike Smith said. “We just constantly preach the details every day and stay in the now.”
