The Met Office has explained why it has been so hot lately as the UK is on track for one of its warmest summers on record.

The UK’s mean temperature from June 1 to August 17 stands 1.6C above the long-term meteorological average at 16.2C. Both the maximum and minimum temperatures have also been significantly above average, but minimum temperatures have been especially high, according to the Met Office.

Several factors have contributed to the persistent high temperatures, the weather body has revealed, including a dominant high-pressure system.

Dry spring soils reducing evaporative cooling, and a significant marine heatwave around the UK have also been increasing the air temperatures.
