ST. CLOUD — Just off the shore of the Mississippi River, across a bridge, is a forbidden adventure.

But at one time, Sportsman's Island was bustling with activities.

The island, 3 miles south of St. Cloud State University, was a popular place for parties, company picnics and trap shooting from the mid-'50s to the late '70s.

“A lot of activities were on the island,” David Melby, 84, said. “It actually had a softball field on there.”

Melby lived on Island View Court, and from his house he could see the bridge leading to the island. He is also a longstanding member of the St. Cloud Country Club.

After leasing the 21-acre island from the Community Wildlife Club, also called the “Sportsmen’s Club,” from 1954 to 1982, the St. Cloud Country Club now owns the property.
