A man is in police custody, accused of fatally shooting a woman inside a vehicle on I-26 in Newberry County Monday.

According to the Newberry County Sheriff's office, it happened on the westbound side of I-26 near the Prosperity exit (Exit 82).

The man allegedly shot the woman, then ran away on foot across the interstate.

Newberry County sheriff's deputies arrested the suspect at the Mid Carolina Country Club.

The State Law Enforcement Division and other state agencies are investigating the shooting, which is being treated as a homicide.

During the search for the suspect, Mid Carolina School campuses were placed on lockdown and Prosperity Richard School was placed on alert.
