A ceremony in Plattsburgh intended to honor the memory of former Clinton County Clerk John Zurlo turned tense when Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) was met by a chorus of boos and jeers from protesters.

NBC 5 reported that Stefanik, a fervent ally of President Donald Trump, attended the renaming event at the Clinton County Government Center on Monday morning, alongside local officials and Zurlo’s family.

Zurlo, who passed away in December at 86, was long regarded as a cornerstone of public service. He held numerous roles across the county for over five decades.

When Stefanik stepped to the podium to speak, she was interrupted by protesters chanting, "You sold us out" along with repeated boos.

Speaking to the press afterward, Stefanik expressed her dismay that the event had been turned political, per the report.

She said, “Today's event was about honoring John Zurlo. It is a disgusting disgrace that this is what the far left does. Rather than understanding that his family has been through a tremendous amount. It was about honoring his legacy.”

Earlier, Stefanik and State Senator Dan Stec clashed with Clinton County Clerk Jerika Manning, calling for Manning’s resignation amid a conflict over selecting the Republican nominee in an upcoming special election for Assemblyman Billy Jones’s seat.

Stefanik has hinted at a potential gubernatorial campaign to challenge Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), but said she would wait until after the November elections before sharing further details.
