The American Constitutional Rights Union (ACRU) presented three Alabama sheriffs with the Defender Award for their work removing illegal aliens from the country.
Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine, Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver and Lawrence County Sheriff Max Sanders were recognized in Northwest Alabama for working cooperatively with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to protect legal, law-abiding citizens from criminal illegal aliens.
The sheriffs participated in the Task Force Model, the Warrant Service Model and the Jail Enforcement Model, despite being prohibited by state law from participating in the 287 (g) program, which authorizes ICE to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the authority to perform specified immigration officer functions.
