What to Know

Erik and Lyle Menendez have parole hearings this week that could lead to freedom after decades in prison for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents.

The path to the parole hearing was cleared when the brothers, serving life prison sentences without possibility of parole, were resentenced to 50 years to life.

Erik Menendez's parole hearing is scheduled for Thursday. Lyle Menendez's case will go before the panel Friday.

The brothers will appear for the hearings on a video feed from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

If approved for parole, the parole suitability hearing panel's grant goes to the Board of Parole Hearings’ chief counsel before consideration by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
