In most election years, a single development project probably wouldn’t have an outsized influence on a citywide mayoral race.

Not so in 2025, when the Boston campaign season has been filled with discussion of the redevelopment of White Stadium.

The Franklin Park stadium, originally built in the 1940s for use by Boston Public Schools athletics, was mostly demolished earlier this year to make way for a new, state-of-the-art facility.

The planned stadium — and its costs — will be shared between student athletes, the public and a new National Women’s Soccer League team, to be known as Boston Legacy FC.

Though incumbent Mayor Michelle Wu, a Democrat, has promoted the project as creating new, much-needed opportunities for BPS students , there has been loud opposition from some residents.
