AVON — The city of Avon is offering local high school students the opportunity to get involved in civic life and environmental stewardship through a new opening on the Avon Tree Commission.

Applicants must be Avon residents, at least 16 years old and currently enrolled in high school. Though the role is non-voting and unpaid, the student member will serve a two-year term and play a hands-on part in supporting the city’s tree canopy.

The tree commission meets twice monthly to guide the city’s urban forestry efforts. This includes studying, advising and encouraging the adoption and implementation of a comprehensive tree plan to maintain and expand the city’s urban forest.

Applications are due by Oct. 1 . They should be addressed to the attention of Barbara Brooks and delivered to Avon
