OTTUMWA, Iowa (KCRG) - A teenager was severely injured in a “car surfing” accident in Ottumwa on Monday, KCCI reports .

At around 1:00 a.m. Monday, emergency staff responded to a medical report in the 100 block of Church Street in Ottumwa, according to authorities.

Upon arrival, authorities located a 17-year-old female with injuries on the edge of the roadway.

The girl was standing on top of a car heading southbound on Church Street, according to the release. She fell off the car while it was moving.

The 17-year-old suffered severe injuries. She was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

She has not been identified.

The accident is under investigation. No other information is known at this time.
