WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced Aug. 18 that he called Russian President Vladimir Putin to urge him to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the latest effort to end hostilities between the two warring nations.

The call capped a day filled with meetings between Trump, Zelenskyy and seven European leaders to bring peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Describing the meetings as "very good," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that he also wants a trilateral meeting between him, Zelenskyy and Putin.

Trump said security guarantees for Ukraine by various European countries had been discussed "with a coordination with the United States of America." He did not specify what the coordination would entail.
