President Donald Trump made a revealing quip in the White House while he met with his Ukrainian counterpart, according to one analyst.
As Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met, Trump quipped about not having elections during wartime. Zelenskyy has temporarily suspended elections in his country because of the war with Russia.
The comments may seem meaningless to some viewers, but progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen said on his show "No Lies" on Monday that they are a "very serious" threat to democracy.
"Trump is not joking when he says that he wants to cancel elections," Cohen said. "He is testing the fence."
Trump has consistently attacked America's election system since he lost the 2020 presidential election. On Monday, Trump announced that he plans to "lead a movement" to get rid of mail-in ballots for elections, a process that he has claimed is rigged.
No credible evidence has been presented that suggests the 2020 election was stolen, and Trump-aligned media outlets that have spread such accusations have paid millions to settle defamation claims brought by election technology companies like Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic.
There appears to be a deeper desire driving Trump's actions, Cohen added.
"In fact, Trump's desire to be a wartime president is already abundantly clear," Cohen said.
"He is normalizing us to this idea very much in the same way that deploying troops to DC and LA is going to normalize us to soldiers occupying our own country," he continued.
