The Indiana General Assembly’s calendar of interim committee meetings suggests the state doesn’t take seriously such panels to weigh topics in preparation for the next legislative session. Of the 22 topics lawmakers were to study prior to the 2026 legislative session, just one committee — the Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary — has met since June. And its members only convened for the first time Monday.
Over the summer and fall, legislators are supposed to discuss subjects assigned by the General Assembly’s Legislative Council, a body comprised of the House speaker and Senate president, as well as senators and representatives from both parties. But even when such committees meet, some of the groups’ final reports filed with the council will include no legislative recomme
