A funny thing happened to cornerback Virdel Edwards II’s plan to spend a couple seasons with the Hawaii football team.

Two became three and now Edwards is entering what really, truly promises to be a final — and seventh — NCAA season.

“It was an extended stay, but it was definitely needed,” said Edwards, who spent three years at Iowa State before transferring to UH as a fourth-year junior in 2022.

At the time, Edwards was poised to help replenish a UH secondary that lost both starting cornerbacks. Head coach Todd Graham also was building a pipeline with Prestonwood Christian Academy. Three other Lions had signed with the Warriors. Edwards signed in December 2021. But a month later, Graham resigned, ending a controversial two-year tenure. Timmy Chang was hired as Graham’s successor.
