WHITE PLAINS – An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institute at Otisville will be spending the remainder of his life behind bars after being convicted of murder in connection with the killing of another inmate at the prison in Orange County.
On October 26, 2021, Daniel Smith, 65, was incarcerated at the Otisville facility, where he was serving time for an assault he committed in 2013 while incarcerated.
To obtain a transfer to a different housing unit, without provocation, Smith brutally attacked another inmate housed in the cell next to his by swinging a lock tied to a belt and striking his victim in the head repeatedly, cracking open his skull and killing him.
The murder charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
