All indications now point to some sanity prevailing on Tuesday with regard to the disclosure of expense claims made by Alberta cabinet ministers and senior government officials.

Following the outcry last week over the government’s decision to quietly remove the requirement that officials disclose receipts for expenditures over $100, the premier vowed cabinet would examine and reconsider the change at Tuesday’s meeting. It’s unclear whether this represents a correction or a climbdown, but either way, it’s most welcome.

And while the premier and her cabinet will surely pat themselves on the back for fixing a problem of their own creation, it merely reverts us back to what was already a problematic status quo for transparency in Alberta. The “corrections” need to go much further.
