A woman was killed in a crash on the Beltway in Prince George’s County on Monday afternoon after a tire flew off a pickup truck and hit her SUV, authorities say.

The driver was headed south on I-495 at Medical Center Drive when the rear driver side tire of a Dodge Ram 1500 “separated from the vehicle” as its driver headed north, Maryland State Police said in a statement.

The tire flew across the southbound lanes and hit the woman’s Lexus NX 200t. She crashed into a concrete barrier and guardrail, according to the initial investigation.

State troopers responded at about 1:50 p.m. The woman, Tammy Lynn Edwards, of D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene. She was 59.

No one in the Ram was hurt, police said.
