A fight turned violent when gunfire erupted during a memorial service in Maryland, leaving one person shot as loved ones gathered to honor a homeowner who had recently died, police said.

Friends, family, and neighbors gathered along the unit block of Brooks Terrace Road at around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, in Glen Burnie to celebrate the life of an area homeowner, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

During the memorial, police said that a fight broke out, and multiple shots were fired, with at least one person with a gunshot wound and the shooter fled. 

Upon arrival, officers were met by a large crowd and found the shooting victim, who was rushed by crews to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland for treatment.

The suspect remains at large on Tuesday morning. The shooting remains under investigation.
