Michigan's Upper Peninsula could see its northern lights visibility blocked by clouds tonight, according to the National Weather Service 's forecast.

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center's view line shows up to nine states could see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, Tuesday night, Aug. 19.

However, in the aftermath of expected rain and thunderstorms Tuesday, Aug. 19, local NWS offices predict lingering cloud cover and potential showers in parts of the UP, limiting any aurora viewing.

NOAA says a G0 geomagnetic storm, a worldwide disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field, is expected to produce a Kp index of 3.

Kp is an index used to indicate the severity of the global magnetic disturbances in near-Earth space, NOAA said. Kp ratings range from zero to 9.
