COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Paws Humane Society declared a state of emergency due to the number of animals surpassing available kennel space.

According to Marketing Manager, Amy Byrne, as of Tuesday, Aug. 19, 547 animals are under Paws Humane’s care.

57 are waiting to enter the shelter through the Neighborhood Pets program

219 are in foster care

380 active surrender applications are pending assistance

Bryne says staff members have to set up temporary crates wherever possible due to the shelter having more dogs than kennels.

“People often hear ‘please adopt, please foster,’ and it can sound like the same plea repeated,”
