GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After three years, the Clapp Family Mastodon that was found in Kent County will be on display at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM).

The mastodon was unearthed in August 2022 by a construction crew in Kent City. The crew had been working on a drainage project when the first bone was uncovered and GRPM was called.

Staff with both GRPM and the University of Michigan worked to uncover the skeleton. About 130 bones, or 70% of the skeleton, was successfully recovered. Museum officials have called the skeleton "remarkably complete."

After the bones were fully recovered, they spent a year and a half drying in the museum's collections.
