LANSING, Mich. — Weeks after the statutory deadline of July 1, a school aid budget has not been passed by the Michigan Legislature, leaving schools wondering about what level of funding they will receive as the school year is already underway.

There is no penalty for missing the July 1 deadline, but that is the beginning of the fiscal year for many of Michigan's public school districts. The Michigan Legislature will have to pass a full budget and have it signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer by Oct. 1 to avoid a government shutdown.

Michigan's split legislature — Democrats in control of the Senate and Republicans in control of the House — blames each other for the delay.
