Hackensack officials are calling on NJ Transit to perform safety checks along its rail line that runs through the city after two people were fatally struck by trains in the city and another in River Edge in the last two months.

In an open letter to NJ Transit’s Agency Safety Management Department, Hackensack’s mayor and City Council asked for immediate action to identify and fix dangerous areas along the Pascack Valley Line.

A train on the line struck Luz E. Lopez of Hackensack on the tracks near the Essex Street Station in Hackensack at about 9:58 a.m. on Aug. 7, NJ Transit officials said.

A man was killed in the same area near the Anderson Street Station in Hackensack on May 22, authorities said.
