A great white shark has been spotted near a beach in Ogunquit.

The 6- to 8-foot shark was seen about 200 yards off Little Beach on Tuesday morning, according to the Ogunquit Fire Department.

“This is a reminder that our ocean is the natural home of sharks. We want the public to be aware of today’s sighting, and we are actively monitoring the area for any additional activity,” the Fire Department said.

Just over five years ago, Maine recorded its first fatal shark attack when a great white shark bit Julie Dimperio Holowach, 63, of New York City while she was swimming in Mackerel Cove off Bailey Island in Harpswell.
