WELLS, Maine —

Three New Hampshire residents had a close encounter with a shark while fishing off the Maine coast.

Whitney Fitzgerald of Dover said she was with her boyfriend, Luke Ramsey, and his father, Christopher Ramsay, when they spotted the shark near Moody Beach in Wells, Maine, around 7 a.m. Saturday.

At first, Fitzgerald said she thought the shark was a dolphin, and Luke Ramsey thought it was a baby whale, until it swam closer to their boat.

"And so we turned around and kind of started to follow the fin with our boat, and we got right up close to it and saw that it was in fact not a dolphin. And it was maybe a shark. What kind, I don't know, but it was right there," Fitzgerald said.

They said it was their first time seeing a shark in Maine.
