LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Roots, the Canadian apparel company best known for casual wear and leather goods, has filed a federal trademark lawsuit accusing Grand Rapids-based Meijer of planning to launch a children's clothing label called 'ROOTS & THREADS' that is similar to its brand.

In a complaint filed on Aug. 8, 2025, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, Roots claims it asked Meijer to drop the name after a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office lawyer issued a non-final action rejecting the supermarket chain's trademark application due to likely consumer confusion, but Meijer declined.
